Core Team Feature / III Points
At the arrival of III Points music, art & technology festival's much anticipated fifth year, Miami New Times ran a feature on the core, three person team that pilots the planning and execution of the local production every October in Miami. We commissioned one of III Points' establishing artists Mokibaby to style one of her distinct stacked TV installations for the cover, and photographed founders David Sinopoli, Ross LaBrie and Erica Freshman in III Points' headquarters in downtown Miami. Roller Disco / Faena Forum
Faena Forum's participatory roller disco installation ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces returned on Sunday, October 8, for another all-day edition of free skating and funky jams, curated by DJ Paperwater and friends. This month featured beginner roller-dancing lessons by Miami Quad Squad, and food by LovJuice and Wynwood Parlor as skaters glided between assume vivid astro focus's pulsating, geometric visuals projected in the circular space.
Paws in the Pool / The Venetian
The Venetian Pool was packed with furry patrons on Sunday, October 1, as it welcomed dogs of all kinds to swim with their humans for the day. Two time slots were loosely split between small dogs late morning and bigger dogs in the afternoon, but as long as the pups remained friendly they were allowed to stay as long as they could keep afloat. Front 242 / The Ground
The Ground at Club Space opened with an electronic rumble Thursday, September 21, featuring a killer live audio and visual performance by Belgium's techno-industrial pioneers Front 242. Nina Belief opened for the act with a dark synth hypnotic sound and Mystic Bill maintained energy between sets. Shot for Miami New Times.
Counter Corner: Irma Edition
Despite blocks of North Miami Avenue still without power, Counter Corner returned to 1306 this month to raise proceeds for those severely affected by Hurricane Irma. 1306 management and event organizers Sleeper Speaks and Juleisy y Karla were able to secure a generator last minute to provide lights for the queens as they performed. A modest crowd filled the venue with warm energy, excited to have a familiar safe space to return to after the storm.
Flaming Classics x Secret Celluloid Society
On Sunday, September 3, Flaming Classics and Secret Celluloid Society secured a floating screen to the outdoor pool at the University of Miami for two, back-to-back 35mm screenings of Disney's classic The Little Mermaid. Both shows featured wet, live drag performances beforehand by local queens Miss Toto and Persephone Von Lips as Ursula and Ariel. The Knight Foundation just named Flaming Classics as a finalist for the 2017 Knight Arts Challenge Miami. Slideshow for Miami New Times.
